Happy birthday!!! I’m about to make the big 30 so this was heaven to read. And weird to realize I never did much messing around…but that’s what next year is for, right?
Oh, baby, you tell it like it is and I love you for it. I’m older than you, and my mortality is a bitch that insists on playing havoc with my already hot-wired brain u til I drown it out with a shot or two of Everclear. (Nah, but it might as well be.) A belated Happy Birthday to you, dear and thank you for this honest piece that made me laugh and gave me goosebumps. You are one talented, incredible broad and I bet you and I would tear it up. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
So glad I found your substack!!! I too make dark jokes and hope for glitter and laughs when my time comes. I said more in my restack - but popping by here to encourage people to check out T2 (the Trainspotting sequel) if they haven’t. One of the best sequels of all time and has a “Choose Life” speech that’s updated for the social media era!
Dang, I missed this one and am late to the (birthday) party. Welcome to another year of whatever this is - a smorgasbord of all the worst with a few snacks of good times if you can catch the early bird. The highs are never as high (or maybe we aren't as high) as they once were. And the lows seems to swing a little lower. Seems to come with the territory of being an oldster.
Out of all the women I call a friend in real life, you have the most incredible stories and exceptional life experiences I've ever heard. I'm gutted that you are going through PD hell. Swiss check out time - I get it. The reviews seem sort of sterile and perfunctory but maybe efficiency is the way. Let's discuss in person soon. Hope you can get an overnight here. Or maybe we can do a fall fling in Chi-town? Miss you. Love you. - fellow aging childless rebel lady (with a cat now, meow)
Eileen, I found you, and this, after creeping on the followers of another writer. I know, that's weird...but not THAT kind of weird. Anyway, happy birthday! Was it the 3rd? Some of the best people I know were born then or right around, including my older daughter whose 30th was yesterday. I write over at Chicken Scratch and have this notion that what comes out on my page might make you want to poison me, too. I appreciate folks like you who can turn cynicism into comedy and keep reality in focus, but despite myself I keep falling back into hopeful shit like nature, and interactions with strangers that make me smile. I think, though, it's two sides of the same coin. Kind of a "what else are you gonna do" mentality.
At any rate, thank you for your honesty, humor, and tenacity. And if for some reason you can't make it to Switzerland when the time comes, you can try Vermont. I don't live there, but it's my back-up plan. By the way, I turned 62 two weeks ago. Yeehaw!

Birthday was 8/4 (same as your daughter?) Leos are fine folks. I hope you both had excellent birthdays. I'm glad you fell into my orbit however you crept in...Substack can be a most delicious rabbit hole.
Happy birthday Flygirl! I turned 54 yesterday so delighted to read you are a fellow Leo 🤗 my dad had Parkinsons and it is so good to read your posts. He shared your sentiments about checking out and he passed in January. It was my privilige to be with him those final days.
Big hug xxx
(PS I agree on those stupid red bottom shoes! What bullshit!)
Happy birthday to you, my Leo friend! I hope your day was lovely. Thank you for reading and sharing about your father…I love that you were able to have quality time with him until he let go. A peaceful ending is a powerful choice. Hugs back. xxx
I appreciate you! Your comment tickled me as I feel like my shit is the complete opposite of together but I love that you're getting some positivity from the posts. Huzzah!
My god did I love this. Happy Birthday, Eileen. You are a queen and a rockstar and a very wise human bean as my daughter used to say. And I am so happy and grateful to know you ❤️
It's a great day to be a human bean!! Thank you for the boost, between all this joy and Jimmy Carter saying he's hanging in to cast a vote for Kamala, I am over the moon with good feels.
Happy birthday lady! I hope you do something lovely for yourself today!!
There is a decadent grilled cheese in my future. Thank you, Kari.
So very glad you were born, and so very lucky to call you my friend. ❤️ 2 Doors Down by Dolly Parton will be on my Swiss Miss Mix!
You can’t go wrong with Dolly. She’s our wonderwall ❤️

30? You’re so wise for being a wee babe. And there’s loads of time to get crazy if it appeals.
I’ve got the mind of 90 year old!
Not a bad thing…..
This is fabulous. And happy birthday 🥳
Thank you! I appreciate your kind words 😍
Happy Birthday, Eileen. I love you so much

also interesting news re: Vermont. I guess you do not need to be a resident to take advantage of their MAID program now.
Correct
